Optimal Fetal Positioning- Reduce Labour time, Minimise Pain, Have A Natural Birth

Remember mama- YOU are making this baby, your body would not create a baby that it cannot birth. Your body shape and pelvis is unique to you and your body will sculpt this baby that you will be able to birth.

Optimal Fetal Positioning- Reduce Your Time In Labour, Minimise Pain & Have A Natural Birth

Optimal Fetal Position

Optimal fetal position refers to the position baby is in the uterus with reference to the presenting part on mamas cervix & the location of babies back in regards to mamas spine. The importance of bubs position to achieve a spontaneous vaginal birth, minimising maternal pain in labour and duration of labour is HUGE!

Benefits of bub being in optimal fetal position:

  • Head circumference is smaller
  • The position of the skull presenting to the cervix moulds easiest on descent through the pelvis
  • Lastly, the most equal head pressure is applied onto the cervix encouraging it to dilate equally

Bub being in the optimal fetal position is where they instinctively try to go through pregnancy, usually by 36-38weeks. If there are obstacles making it difficult for baby to get into the optimal position by the birth date, this is where complications can arise for mama through her labour.
These obstacles include:

  • Ligaments that are too tight or loose making the uterus smaller for baby to move in. This is why Body Balancing in pregnancy & prenatal yoga is so important.
  • Working against gravity & the morphed shape of the uterus. This is why maternal posture is so important. I educate about this in my Body Balancing also.
The position baby enters the pelvis isn’t the ‘be all end all’ of the labour. If baby enters on the right side or posterior, usually they’re very cleaver at wiggling and rotating their heads throughout the labour into the optimal positional. Especially when the mother is ‘Active Birthing’, she is moving around, opening her hips and moving her spine instinctively, this is what gives baby the room and ability to rotate. Appetence Families does provide Active Birth workshops for couples.  This just takes time, & contractions meaning that the labour is longer and contractions while baby is in a non-optimal position can tend to be quite painful and sometimes described as ‘sharp’. Avoiding this step of your labour is ideal to have a normal vaginal birth.

In the end, babies will almost always come on out no matter what position it enters the pelvis in. So if you wish to aim for the optimal bub position, get some Appetence Body balancing and follow up with weekly prenatal yoga– otherwise accept your labour for what it is in the present moment, go in with no expectation, maintain calm in the mind, utilise minimal intervention to give baby the chance to wiggle itself into the optimal position and flow with the waves.
